Why Cold Storage Solar Works

Solar That Matches Refrigeration Demand

Cold storage facilities have large flat roof areas with minimal shading, making them ideal for high-capacity solar PV. Refrigeration is the single largest electricity cost in any cold store, and solar generation peaks during the same daylight hours when compressor activity is highest. That alignment is what makes the financial case so strong.

Lower Electricity Costs

Irish business electricity averaged €0.23 per kWh in late 2024. Generate your own electricity from daylight and reduce the amount you draw from the grid. Over a 25-year system life, the savings are substantial.

Protection from Price Volatility

Solar gives you a fixed-cost energy source that is not affected by wholesale electricity price swings or supplier rate increases. It replaces a volatile operating expense with predictable on-site generation.

Battery Backup Protects the Cold Chain

Battery storage captures excess daytime generation for overnight use. In a grid outage, it keeps refrigeration running on stored energy, protecting temperature-sensitive food, pharmaceutical and chemical stock.

Reduced Carbon Footprint

Solar PV produces zero emissions at the point of generation, directly lowering your facility's carbon output. Monitored generation data evidences progress against supplier sustainability targets and Ireland's climate commitments.

The Resolute Product Difference

Bifacial Panels Built for Cold Storage Roofs

Resolute installs bifacial (glass-on-glass) panels exclusively, sourced from AE Solar and Longi. They generate from both faces, capturing reflected light from roof surfaces and surrounding hard standing, for a higher annual yield per kWp than conventional panels.

Bifacial panels also carry a superior fire-performance rating compared with standard glass-and-backsheet construction. That matters in regulated environments storing high-value temperature-sensitive food, pharmaceutical or chemical stock.

Custom Solutions for Difficult Sites

Six Steps from Enquiry to Install

When the existing roof structure could not take a rooftop array, Resolute designed a custom ground-mounted system on the surrounding land, overcoming structural constraints to deliver the distribution centre with a custom solar solution. The same engineering capability applies to farm sites with unsuitable roof stock or available paddock land.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Solar panels generate electricity during daylight hours. When paired with battery storage, excess daytime generation is stored for use overnight or during periods of low solar output, keeping your refrigeration running continuously.

This depends on your roof or ground area, system size and energy consumption pattern. We confirm the expected coverage after a site survey and energy assessment tailored to your facility.

Battery storage activates automatically during a grid outage, keeping your refrigeration systems running on stored energy until the main supply is restored. We size battery capacity to your critical load profile during design.

Yes. Solar panels generate electricity from daylight, not direct sunshine. Output is lower in winter but panels continue to perform throughout the year in Irish conditions, with strong yields across spring and summer.

No. Our SEAI-certified installers work around your operational schedule. Your refrigeration systems remain fully active throughout the installation process, and we coordinate every phase with your facilities team.

Timelines depend on system size and site complexity. We confirm the full project schedule after your site survey. Most installations take 8 to 14 weeks from first survey to commissioning, with refrigeration active throughout.

Scheduled maintenance visits, real-time performance monitoring, inverter health checks, component replacement, and full lifetime support for the entire 25-year panel guarantee. No other installer in the Irish market offers this.
